Ezra Butler Suspended

A couple observations on the Ezra Butler situation.

First, Nevada coach Chris Ault deserves credit for upholding the law and sitting Butler, his best player, against Nebraska for the team’s first game on Sept. 1 for breaking an unspecified team rule.

At the same time, that’s what should be expected of any credible coach. Unfortunately, Nevada hasn’t always had one of those.

You’ve got to wonder how many incidents like this slid by about four years ago when the Wolf Pack looked more like a state penal system than a football team under former coach Chris Tormey.

For those who don’t remember, here’s a refresher.
As for Butler, this kind of irresponsibility is nigh unforgivable.

The Wolf Pack has struggled against upper-echelon teams – see last season’s Arizona State game, the Washington State game in 2005, and every Boise State game this millennium – and the Cornhuskers represent Nevada’s toughest BCS opponent to date.

The Pack was going to have a tough enough time competing against Nebraska with Butler. Without him, the Pack’s outlook is bleak.

I’m sure Butler realizes how much he’s hurt his team and possibly his NFL prospects, but that doesn’t make his actions any more forgivable.

Bottom line, Butller’s teammates needed him in a huge kind of way, and he let them down.

Not what you expect from a senior leader.
