Barry Bonds is ruining my life.
Whenever somebody finds out that I’m a sportswriter covering the University of Nevada, they inevitably ask my opinion about Bonds, his huge head, and his homerun record.
At least now I know how bands like A Flock of Seagulls feel. Sure, they have an entire catalogue of songs, but nobody cares. All people want to hear is “I Ran.”
In hopes this will restore sanity to my life, here is my opinion on Bonds:
Regardless of his tainted homerun record, Barry Bonds is absolutely a first ballot Hall of Famer. As much as people generally dislike Mr. Bonds, and as apparent as his steroid use may seem, it’s unfair to make an example of him for a generation full of cheaters.
Guys like Ken Griffey, Jr. and Frank Thomas seem to get a free pass in these accusations, but the truth is we don’t know with any real certainty who all used steroids in the last 20 years. One thing that is certain, however, is that Bonds is tremendously talented with or without steroids and he’s the best player of his generation.
Therefore, you’ve either got to put Bonds in the Hall or keep all the players from the steroid era out.
Alright, there it is. If you see me out around town, you already know how I feel about Bonds.
So let’s talk about something else, like how underrated Flock of Seagulls was as a band.
