Nevada volleyball vs. UNLV - a live-blog experience

Addiction is a terrible thing.

It’s been almost a year since my last fix, and I’m still struggling to get through each day.

I can’t focus, I wake up drenched in sweat (that’s right ladies), and I find myself convulsing during classes.

I can’t handle it anymore, I have to see those rascals from the south taking a proper beating from Nevada’s real four-year institution.

That’s right, I hate UNLV, and it’s been almost a year since Nevada’s euphoria-inspiring 31-3 victory in last year’s football game.

The Battle for the Fremont Cannon may not be for another few weeks, but I can get a bit of a fix tonight as the Nevada volleyball team takes on the Rebels. I’m so excited that I’m live-blogging it.

6:54 - Just walked in the gym. It’s hot. The Nevada vs. UNLV game is part of a two-day, four-team tournament here at The U. Alphie was just hitting on one of the Washington State players. Does that constitute bestiality?

7:12 - UNLV leads 10-9 in the first game, both teams have made some mistakes early. There’s a pretty nice crowd in the gym. Most of the students look younger, which means we’ll probably be free of the “#$@& the Rebels chants.” Thank God. Although there are a few FUNLV t-shirts in crowd, which is good to see (I’m all for implied profanity).

7:22 - Nevada leads 20-17, first game. The Wolf Pack is playing inspired. Teal Ericson just dug a ball while falling down, which setter Ashley Miller managed to tap over the net with a flail. Their block has been pretty dominant with Karly Sipherd and Jorgan Staker and Teal Ericson has a handful of kills.

7:31 - Another kill for Teal Ericson, her fifth, makes the score 28-25. The Wolf Pack’s about to take the first game. In other news, the acoustics in Virginia Street Gym are amazing. There’s a great echo whenever a long rally gets going.

7:34 - Nevada wins 30-26 on Ericson’s sixth kill. It’s only one game, but watching so many Rebels look so angry is satisfying. Note to self: tape football game for viewing after graduation.

7:44 - Wolf Pack trails 12-8 in the second game. The block hasn’t been quite as good and Ericson’s been the only real weapon so far in the kill department.

7:56 - Rebels lead 24-15. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the Rebels are going to even the score. The Wolf Pack seems really emotional. That helped in the first game, but they seem out of control this game.

8:00 - UNLV wins second game 30-17. Ugly. Watching the Rebels celebrate is about as happiness-inspiring as a puppy kicking competition (unless, of course, you’re Michael Vick).

8:05 - A bunch of kids are playing musical chairs as the halftime entertainment. Most of them look like they want to win it, but I don’t see any that look like they need to win it. My money’s on the kid in the Cleveland Indians hat. He’s not real big, but he’s got sharp elbows.

8:10 - The kid in the Indians hat lost.

8:22 - Not many Rebels fans made the trip, as evidence by the blue and silver present. There is one kid in the Wolf Pack family section with a red shirt on. I guess he deserves a free pass. He’s only about eight and, to be honest, the shirt is more maroon than red. Still…

8:30 - Game 3. Wolf Pack leads 19-17.

8:42 - Picked fight with the 8-year-old. Much tougher than size suggested. Now I have a black eye and warrant out for my arrest…

Alright, just kidding. But UNLV just won the third game 30-27, which is almost as bad.

8:51 - Teal Ericson just hammered her 20th kill. Despite the fact Nevada’s trailing the fourth game 12-8, Ericson is having a monster match. Aside from the kills, she had some nice digs and a couple blocks.

8:55 - Wolf Pack trails 17-9. Things aren’t looking good. The Rebels block is doing a nice job and the Wolf Pack isn’t getting much offense from the right side.

8:58 - Rebels up 21-11. Lots of unforced errors from the Wolf Pack. A beer would make this a lot easier. Why aren’t more people drinking beer here?

9:00 - 23-11. Wolf Pack took another timeout. Blah, blah, blah. Words don’t do justice to my hatred for UNLV. I think it started at the age of six, when my older cousin (a UNLV fan) hung me in a closet by my underwear. That, or the fact that UNLV embarrasses the Nevada university system in about everyway imaginable (athletically, academically, philosophically?).

9:04 - 29-16, Nevada just needs to score 15 straight points to stay in the match.

9:05 - Nevada didn’t get 15 straight points. It was a lot more like zero. UNLV wins 26-30, 30-17, 30-27, 30-16. Teal Ericson (24 kills) and Karly Sipherd (12 kills) had big games. The question now is whether the game one victory will hold me over until the football game.

Where’s that 8-year-old in the red shirt?
