Wildcats should be a handful

The Nevada football team grabbed a nice win last season by beating Northwestern.

The Wildcats are beatable again this season - and a win against a Big Ten team would help erase last week’s blowout - but it will definitely be much tougher.

First off, the Wildcats played last season in the shadow of the death of coach Randy Walker. No offense to 32-year-old coach Pat Fitzgerald, but he wasn’t prepared to take over. The mourning of Walker and the inexperience of Fitzgerald had a lot to do with the Wildcats’ 4-8 record.

Neither of those things will be an issue this season. Fitzgerald is still a bit inexperienced, but he won’t be overwhelmed anymore. The Wildcats will be prepared to play.

The other big difference is at quarterback, where C.J. Bacher is back under center. He was 22 for 29 for 243 yards and a touchdown against Northeastern last week.

Junior running back Tyrell Sutton is also in form for a third straight 1,000 yard season, which is particularly worrisome to a Wolf Pack defense that got torched by the run last week.

The Wolf Pack defense will be formidable,  however, especially with the return of All-WAC linebacker Ezra Butler. The Wolf Pack’s offensive line should also have a better time against the Wildcats, so quarterback Nick Graziano will have an opportunity to create some points.
