Former Nevada point guard Ramon Sessions signed a two-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday, which brings him one step closer to validating his decision to leave school early for the NBA.
Still, time will tell whether Sessions made a good choice.
His contract with the Bucks, like those of most second round picks, is not guaranteed, so essentially Sessions’ contract doesn’t change much in regards to his future.
He still has to make the Bucks roster to validate his contract, and that will be a fight. The Bucks currently list 14 players on their roster.
What the contract does say, however, is the Bucks like Sessions enough to give him a shot at making the team in camp, which isn’t afforded to all players in his situation.
Sessions decision to forego his senior season is still a bit baffling. He created a great deal of hype with his play last season and his sold performance at the NBA predraft camp. Sessions would also have been a centerpiece for the Wolf Pack along with returning senior Marcelus Kemp.
It would have been conceivable for Sessions to play his way into the first round of the 2008 draft with a solid senior season. Instead, Sessions left school and almost went undrafted, the Buck took him at No. 56.
Sessions is a great passer with good size for his position, but he’s not much of a scorer yet. Sessions will play in the NBA eventually; it’s just a matter of how hard he’ll have to fight to get there.
