Bye week observations

Louisville was a sleeper to win the national championship entering the season, and there was an awful lot to like about the Cardinals - namely quarterback Brian Brohm and a speedy group of receivers.

After losing two straight games - Syracuse? - the Cardinals have generously proved an important point - it doesn’t matter how many points you score if you can’t stop anybody else.

Where the WAC is concerned, Hawaii is similar to the Cardinals. Great quarterback, plenty of athletic receivers, and a defense with more holes than the plot of a Michael Bay movie .

That’s why the Warriors aren’t going to be crashing any BCS parties. That defense might not even be good enough to win the conference.

Other observations from the weekend:

1. Arkansas running back Darren McFadden is really, really good.

2. He didn’t play that well this weekend, but West Virginia running back Noel Devine is going to be really good.

3. The Southeastern Conference is the most physical conference in college football.

4. USC lacks the kind of gamebreaking playmakers they’ve had in the past (see Reggie Bush, Dwayne Jarrett, LenDale White, Mike Williams). It may not matter because of the Trojans’ overall talent, but I think they’re vulnerable.
