UNLV week is finally here.
It’s been sweet reveling in the Wolf Pack’s 31-3 win in Vegas last season, but now it’s time to put that to rest and focus on this year’s matchup.
The Wolf Pack is again the better football team, although the teams are more comparable than most Northern Nevadans would care to admit.
Both teams have young quarterbacks, inexperienced offensive lines, and talented receivers and linebackers.
The Wolf Pack, however, is deeper in the backfield and Nick Graziano is a better passer than Rebels freshman Travis Dixon.
UNLV, in theory, is a better football team than last year and the Wolf Pack is not as good, yet, as last year’s team. Still, that gap was pretty wide to begin with.
Fans at The Commuter College are hailing the resurrection of the program after the Rebels “upset” win against an unranked Utah team last week, but don’t put much stock in that.
First off, despite spanking then-No. 11 UCLA a couple weeks ago, the Utes haven’t exactly been rolling this season. They’re 1-3 after losing to the Rebels, including losses to Oregon State and an average Air Force team.
Second, UNLV coach Mike Sanford was on the Utah staff with Utes coach Kyle Wittingham for several years. While it’s hard to determine how much it helped either side, Sanford does have a more intimate knowledge of Urban Meyer’s spread option that both programs run.
If the Nevada defense contains the UNLV running game, and senior linebacker Ezra Butler is his normal hell-raising self, the Wolf Pack will win.
