Victory before sundown

I’m not friends with whoever decided to move the Battle for the Fremont Cannon from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m.

While trying to cut down on the drinking hours was probably a good idea, all that meant for me was waking up before dawn to sit in a parking lot drinking beer and wanting a sweater.

On the bright side, we didn’t need a cooler for our beer – just a tailgate and a few bags of ice.

The afternoon game seemed to sap some of the energy from the crowd in the middle of the game.

I even saw Mark McLaughlin – a top 100 basketball recruit visiting this weekend – leaning up against the fence in the student section appearing to want a nap more than a touchdown.

But that could also have been because the game was about as exciting as a dog show during the second and third quarters.

At least you can still tell pretty much everyone who went to the game – their faces are burnt with the beautiful red scourge of victory (apparently I’m not the only one who forgot sunscreen_.

The students did find enough energy to rush the field and then taunt the Rebels fans. That situation seemed like it would get out of hand, but the security kept things mostly from escalating into a sea of fights.

The university tried a lot of new things to keep the game in check this year.

Overall, it did a good job of stemming the violence in an increasingly belligerent rivalry.

I just wish I could have grabbed a few more hours of sleep.
