In honor of Nevada’s WAC opener…

Fanatical friend 1: “I have an idea. I was drinking a beer last night and I says to myself ‘Wanna know what would be fun? WAC fantasy football.’”

Me: “You’ve got to be kidding. You realize the mere acknoweldment of this will be enough to scare women off of as long as we live in Reno?”

FF1: “Think about it. Having a WAC fantasy league will give us a reason to pay closer attention to the other teams.”

Me: “Yeah, because it’s not like there’s a shortage of fantasy games out there. Why don’t you just play fantasy NASCAR, fantasy golf, or fantasy bass fishing. Hell, they even have fantasy congress now.”

Needless to say, a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a bunch of numbers in a hat later and we were all sitting around the coffee table trying not to take San Jose State running back Yonus Davis and salivating at the prospect of nabbing super sleeper and Hawaii kicker Dan Kelly in the later rounds.

Here’s the first two rounds before we realized the WAC doesn’t have enough teams to support a fantasy league (my picks in bold):

Round 1.

1. Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii

2. Chris Williams, WR, New Mexico State

3. Davone Bess, WR, Hawaii

4. Ryan Grice-Mullen, WR, Hawaii

5. Jason Rivers, WR, Hawaii

6. Chase Holbrook, QB, New Mexico State

7. C.J. Hawthorne, WR, Hawaii

8. Lopaka Ornellas, Video Coordinator, Hawaii

9. Ian Johnson, RB, Boise State

10. Nick Graziano, QB, Nevada

Analysis: Graziano obviously would be an even better value in a keeper league, but not even we are that hardcore. I caught a tough break picking No. 8 in the first round, but I think I got pretty value with the Ornellas. Brennan hits everybody.

Round 2:

1. Patrick Jackson, RB, Louisiana Tech

2. Luke Lippincott, RB, Nevada

3. Taylor Tharp, QB, Boise State

4. Deonte Jackson, RB, Idaho

5. Dan Kelly, K, Hawaii

6. Adam Tafralis, QB, San Jose State.

7. Bear Pascoe, TE, Fresno State

8. Jeremy Childs, WR, Boise State

9. Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State

10. June Jones, Coach, Hawaii

Analysis: I know, I broke the first rule of fantasy football - “Draft a damn running back.” But this is the WAC. Kelly’s extra point total (37) accounts for more scoring than Ian Johnson (36 points), the WAC’s leading running back.
